Raw Cultured Vegetables

www.bodyecologydiet.comWe now present two of the Diet s special, signature foods: "super" foods that contribute immensely to healing and building your inner ecosystem. On this page, raw cultured vegetables, then, read about kefir from the water of young green coconuts.

*From the 9th edition Body Ecology Diet, by Donna Gates.*

Cultured vegetables are made by shredding cabbage or a combination of cabbage and other vegetables and then packing them tightly into an airtight container. They are left to ferment at room temperature for several days or longer. Friendly bacteria naturally present in the vegetables quickly lower the pH, making a more acidic environment so the bacteria can reproduce. The vegetables become soft, delicious, and somewhat "pickled."

The airtight container can be glass or stainless steel. Use a 1 to 1½ quart container that seals with a rubber or plastic ring and a clamp down lid. Room temperature means 72 degrees Fahrenheit, for at least 3 days. We prefer to let ours sit for six or seven days. You can taste them at different stages and decide for yourself.

In the winter months if your kitchen temperature falls below 70 degrees, wrap the container in a towel and place it inside an insulated or thermal chest. In the summer months the veggies culture faster. They may be ready in just three or four days.

During this fermentation period, the friendly bacteria are having a heyday, reproducing and converting sugars and starches to lactic acid. Once the initial process is over, it is time to slow down the bacterial activity by putting the cultured veggies in the refrigerator. The cold greatly slows the fermentation, but does not stop it completely. Even if the veggies sit in your refrigerator for months, they will not spoil; instead they become more like fine wine, more delicious with time. Properly made, cultured vegetables have at least an eight month shelf life.

While it is not necessary to add a "starter culture" to your vegetables, we recommend that you do it just to ensure that your vegetables begin fermenting with a hardy strain of beneficial bacteria. Body Ecology s Cultured Vegetable Starter contains a very robust bacterium called L. Plantarum. (See our recipes below.)

Enjoying the Fruits of Your Labor
Once you master the basic technique, be creative. Try different vegetable combinations, and include dark green leafy vegetables like kale and collards. Soak, drain, and chop up some ocean vegetables like dulse, wakame, hijiki, and arame. Add your favorite herbs (dried or fresh), seeds (dill or caraway), and juniper berries. Even lemon juice can be added to the "brine." Try leaving out the cabbage all together and making a batch of cultured daikon.

Cynthia Hamilton, a friend of Donna s who lives in Los Angeles, teaches classes on how to make cultured vegetables, and she also sells them, calling them a "probiotic salad". Cynthia recently surprised Donna with a new recipe using kohlrabi, celery, garlic, ginger, and a green apple. It tastes wonderful! Don t be afraid of the little bit of sugar in the green apple. The microflora use it for food. The sugar will be long gone before you eat the cultured veggies. If you create a great new recipe you want to share with others on the B.E.D. around the world, please write or email us and we will happily post it on our Web site.

You may be thinking that making cultured veggies amounts to a big hassle. Well, it is possible to buy them commercially (see our Shopping List), but store-bought amounts can be fairly small and too costly for many people. You wouldn t be getting the "therapeutic amounts" you reap by making your own. So here s a suggestion: plan a "CV Party" with your family and friends. Gather on a weekend afternoon to laugh together, chop and pack the veggies. Make sure everyone leaves with enough containers to last until the next party. You and your loved ones will enjoy many meals of one of the most medicinal and economical foods you ll ever eat.

Two of Our Favorite Beginners Recipes
One important secret to making really delicious yet medicinal cultured veggies is to use freshly harvested, organic, well-cleaned vegetables. After washing the veggies, spin them dry. Clean equipment is essential. Scald everything you use in very hot water.

Version 1
3 heads green cabbage, shredded in a food processor
1 bunch kale, chopped by hand
(optional): 2 cups wakame ocean vegetables (measured after soaking), drained, spine removed, and chopped
1 Tbsp. dill seed
Version 2
3 heads green cabbage, shredded in a food processor
6 carrots, large, shredded in a food processor
3 inch piece ginger, peeled and chopped
6 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
To make Cultured Vegetables
1.Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.
2.Remove several cups of this mixture and put into a blender.
3.Add enough filtered water to make a "brine" the consistency of a thick juice. Blend well and then add brine back into first mixture. Stir well.
4.Pack mixture down into a 1½ quart glass or stainless steel container. Use your fist, a wooden dowel, or a potato masher to pack veggies tightly.
5.Fill container almost full, but leave about 2 inches of room at the top for veggies to expand.
6.Roll up several cabbage leaves into a tight "log" and place them on top to fill the remaining 2 inch space. Clamp jar closed.
7.Let veggies sit at about a 70 degree room temperature for at least three days. A week is even better. Refrigerate to slow down fermentation. Enjoy!
To use Body Ecology's Culture Starter:
Dissolve one or two packages of starter culture in 1½ cup warm (90*) water. Add aproximately 1 tsp. of some form of sugar to feed the starter (try Rapadura, Sucanat, honey, Agave, or EcoBLOOM). Let starter/sugar mixture sit for about 20 minutes or longer while the L. Plantarum and other bacteria wake up and begin enjoying the sugar. Add this starter culture to the brine (step 3).

Why are These Refreshing Smoothies Ideal for Your Health and Energy (and Superior to Juicing)?

Part 1: Vegetable Smoothies
by BodyEcology.com

Blend your way to great health with vegetable smoothies! Find out why vegetable smoothies are superior to juicing when you are healing candida and other health issues. And get started making your own smoothies with our energizing smoothie recipe!

Machines that grind fresh raw fruits and vegetables into juices seem to be everywhere these days: in the stores, on television, pictured in books. It’s a sign that people want to include healthier foods in their diets and reap the benefits of the vitamins, minerals, and enzymes in fresh produce.

But juicing is not the panacea it’s often portrayed to be... especially for people with Body Ecology imbalances.

If you have poor health or candida, drinking juices when your body is still too acidic and without an understanding of how to do juicing properly will only magnify your symptoms. We recommend waiting until your yeast infection is well under control, you have alkalized your blood and your inner ecosystem is healed (which may take at least 3 months) before you begin juicing.

So what can you do in the meantime?

You can make blended smoothies! The smoothies we recommend are delicious, easy to digest and assimilate into your body. They are also ideal for the warm summer months. They do not feed yeast as many smoothies do.

In Part 1 of this two-part piece on smoothies, we will discuss the benefits of vegetable smoothies and provide you with two easy vegetable smoothie recipes. In part 2, we will talk about fruit smoothie do’s and don’ts and provide you with a “template” to make Body Ecology fruit smoothie recipes.

Sublime Vegetable Smoothies
Both blended smoothies and juiced vegetables will provide you with a raw food treat that is full of enzymes yet will be much easier to digest than eating the raw veggie in its whole form.

So, what’s the difference between vegetable juices and vegetable smoothies?
With vegetable blended smoothies, you are drinking all parts of the vegetable, including the fiber. These juices digest more slowly and are even healthier. When you juice vegetables, you remove the fiber, so the vegetable juice metabolizes or goes into your system too quickly, with an effect similar to sugar. Your blood becomes quickly acidic.

Vegetable blended smoothies allow you to obtain the benefits of vegetables in a delicious drinkable form. And, when you make vegetable smoothies, you are breaking down the cellulose fiber in the vegetables, which makes them easier to digest.

We humans lack the ability to digest insoluble fiber because we don’t have the enzyme cellulose in our stomachs like cows do.

Ingredients Count

What you put in your smoothie counts when it comes to creating great health.

Here are some examples of Do’s and Don’ts in vegetable smoothie making:

Don’t – Use raw cruciferous vegetables, like collards, kale, cauliflower, arugula, Brussels Sprouts and broccoli. These raw vegetables have thyroid suppressing properties and are best eaten cooked or fermented.
Do – Use plenty of NON-cruciferous veggies and fresh garden herbs like celery, romaine lettuce, cilantro, basil, cucumbers, green beans, sprouts, yellow squash and zucchini. Veggies and herbs are packed with vitamins and minerals and provide delicious flavor for your smoothies.

We DO NOT recommend the use of beets, carrots or other root vegetables because they become even sweeter when juiced or blended into smoothies. Later as your yeast infection or viral infections are under control, you may be able to add very small amounts of these sweet veggies blended into smoothies but only IF you are sure they are well balanced with mostly alkaline-forming ingredients like the veggies mentioned above (and see below)

Basically, your choice of main ingredients should ensure a very mineral-rich, alkaline smoothie. It’s the mineral-rich vegetables and the fiber in the blended smoothies that help keep your smoothies more alkaline.
Do- practice The Principle of Balance between expansive and contracting foods. Since veggies are slightly expansive a pinch of Celtic Sea Salt and/or a dash of Wheat-Free Low Sodium Tamara (by San-J) can be used to create more balance.

A scoop of Vitality SuperGreen with its fermented algae, fermented green veggies and cereal grasses is a nutrient-dense addition that alkalizes.

Do – Use a healthy, organic form of fat, like avocadoes, unrefined hempseed oil, flaxseed oil, cod liver oil, evening primrose or melted ghee or coconut oil. These add flavor and body, plus a fat or an oil helps keeps your body feeling satisfied longer.
Do – Add sea veggies like wakame or Irish Moss. A small amount goes a long way but they do provide additional proteins, iodine and other minerals that can ensure that you start your day with extra energy and even more brain power.

Give your smoothies a probiotic punch with energizing Innergy-Biotic. Adding 2 – 4 oz. of Innergy-Biotic will help heal your digestion and multiply the nutrients in your vegetable smoothie by hundreds of times! Learn More About Innergy-Biotic and Try Some Today.

Do – Use fermented foods and drinks in your smoothies. Using a probiotic liquid like a few ounces of Innergy-Biotic will add a balancing sour taste, much like lemon juice would. And the addition of beneficial microflora to help create an inner ecosystem in the power center of your body... your intestines... is a must! Even adding a spoonful of cultured vegetables works really well and has many excellent benefits.
Don’t - Combine vegetables and most fruits in your smoothies. However, having said that, a very sour Granny Smith apple and other sour fruits like lemons, limes, noni, acai, cranberry and pomegranate juice concentrates may be okay for most of us. Fruits digest so quickly that they usually do not combine well with any other foods. Blended smoothies may be an exception. It’s a matter of following the Principle of Uniqueness. See what your body likes best. It will speak to you loud and clear.
Do – Try a small amount of a soaked nuts or seeds or even a spoonful of any nut or seed butter that your body seems to like. These give a nice texture, consistency and flavor to your yummy one-of-a-kind creation.

Do - Follow the Body Ecology guidelines for foods to include in your diet. The Body Ecology Diet outlines everything you need to know about the foods to include and avoid when creating a healthy inner ecosystem.

Best Time of the Day to Drink a Blended Smoothie?
We love them in the morning because that’s when our body needs alkaline, easy-to-digest, liquid-y foods best. We wake up dehydrated and acidic and are usually not ready to overburden our digestive systems with rich, complex meals.

Blended smoothies can be a meal replacement especially if you are trying to lose weight. They can also be consumed at any other time of the day and are ideal to take between meals if you need to put on more muscle and/or gain weight. (Yes, while obesity seems to be the main focus of our attention today, some people are undernourished and need supplemental nutrition)

In a nutshell, drink your blended smoothies for breakfast, or as a simple yet nourishing meal or as a snack anytime of the day. They digest so quickly that you will soon find yourself feeling hungry again.

Now that you have some simple yet basic guidelines, you are ready to make your own delicious smoothies!
Here is a vegetable smoothie recipe to get you started... be creative and you’ll find that whipping up these smoothies is as easy as it is delicious!

BENEFITS OF POTENT PROTEINS
Spirulina, the primary source of protein in Potent Proteins, is an ancient super food. It is 60-70% protein by weight, a complete protein source, and rich in vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids, & other nutrients. However, spirulina is difficult to digest and assimilate in its raw form, so this amazing powdered supplement is the optimal way to be sure you are getting all of the health benefits it contains!

Extensive research has shown it to be a truly remarkable food source, with its phenomenally high protein content and rich reserves of many vital nutrients, including vitamin B12 (essential for vegetarians). Spirulina also contains a formidable array of amino acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements together with rare, unsaturated fats including gamma- linolenic acid.

Many of the densely concentrated nutrients in Spirulina help protect our bodies from stress and toxins. Scientific studies on animals and humans have shown that spirulina supports immune function, T-cell proliferation and antibody production. These studies have also shown that spirulina has anti-inflammatory properties, and helps deactivate the toxins in food.

Spirulina is known to contain phytonutrients with strong antioxidant properties which support cellular health by protecting the cell membranes and DNA from damage by reactive oxygen radicals. Many of the health benefits can be obtained from eating large amounts of certain fruits and vegetables. However, spirulina has all of these properties rolled into one.

Studies have shown that Spirulina can:
• Help your body fight infection • Inhibit allergic reactions • Destroy infected and cancerous cells • Lower your Cholesterol • Raise your HDL (good cholesterol) levels • Fight obesity

More on what's inside Potent Proteins:
Soy Beans: Soybeans contain significant amounts of all the essential amino acids that must be provided to the human body because of the body's inability to synthesize them. Fermenting them increases the bio-availability of these amino acids.

Chick Peas: a great source of cholesterol-lowering fiber. In addition, their high fiber content prevents blood sugar levels from rising too rapidly after a meal, making these beans an especially good choice for individuals with diabetes, insulin resistance or hypoglycemia. When combined with whole grains such as rice, chick peas provide virtually fat-free, high quality protein.

Biodynamic Rice: contains high levels of insoluble fiber and contributes B vitamins — folic acid and pyridoxine — iron and potassium. Rice also contains the B vitamin thiamine, which is present in the brain. An excellent source of complex carbohydrates.

Flax Seed: is high in essential fatty acids and is a healing mucilage. Flax seed can be good for the bowel system, soothe cramps and heal inflammation. It provides Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils.

Alfalfa Seeds: a good source of Vitamins B1, B2, niacin, calcium, iron and is an excellent source of protein. Alfalfa seed has a percentage protein by weight of 35% as opposed to lean beef, which has 28% protein by weight.

Millet: is the richest in protein of all the grains. It is also rich in sillica, which is also good for hair, nails and skin. Of all the cereals, millet contains the highest level of iron. Millet also contains magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus and other minerals, along with vitamins A, B1, B2, B3 and small amounts of C.

Quinoa: has an almost perfect amino acid composition, a high content of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron & a low sodium content.

100% fermented to magnify bio-availability. All vegan, kosher and organic.
No Artificial Colorings, Flavorings or Preservatives.

Cultured Kefir Starter Packs

By bodyecologydiet.comBenefits
Kefir has many benefits including better digestion of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, and has been known for thousands of years for its anti-aging and immune enhancing properties.

Kefir is an ancient cultured food rich in amino acids, enzymes, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and B vitamins. Kefir means "feel good" in Turkish, and that's just how you'll feel after drinking a glass in the morning! Easy and fun to make at home, it is superior to commercial yogurt. An absolute must after antibiotic use!

Unlike yogurt, kefir can actually colonize the intestinal tract and is simple and fun to make at home.

Body Ecology Kefir Starter contains the following beneficial bacteria:

Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis
Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris
Lactococcus lactis subsp. diacetylactis,
Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. cremoris
Lactobacillus kefyr (thermophilic)
Klyveromyces marxianus var. marxianus
Saccaromyces unisporus
dextrose as a carrier (consumed during fermentation)

Contains 6 packets which can be used an average of 7 times each. 1/4 cup of previous batch will ferment 1 quart of liquid. 1 cup will make one gallon, and so on. For prolonged shelf life, keep refrigerated before using.

Suggested Use
To activate starter for initial usage:
Into container (preferably glass with lid), mix together the entire contents of one foil package of kefir starter and one quart of slightly warmed milk (about skin temperature or 92 degrees).

Shake, stir or whip with a whisk to mix well. Put lid on container.

Let this mixture ferment at 72-75 F for 18-24 hours for milk, 24-48 hours for coconut water and some others. (You will notice it is ready if the milk has thickened and has a distinctive, sour fragrance. Final consistency is pourable but not "eat with a spoon" thick.) Coconut water will not thicken like milk, only become cloudy and much less sweet.

Shake or stir vigorously and place into the refrigerator. Even in your refrigerator the fermentation process continues, but chilling will slow down the fermentation of the healthy bacteria and beneficial yeast.

Directions for transferring kefir after the initial batch has been made and directions for making kefir cheese are included on packaging.

Donna Gates recommends adding kefir starter to the liquid found inside the young, green coconut.

Kefir is traditionally made with cow's milk, but can be made with soy, coconut, rice, goat, or sheep milk (other varieties of milk yield a more watery kefir than cow's milk).

Kefir is a wonderful addition to smoothies!

Shelf life is 12 months from the manufactured date, or longer when stored in a freezer.

Using the Body Ecology Diet to recovering children from autism and other disorders

We've been here supporting families using the Body Ecology Diet to recover their children from autism and other disorders since 2002.

Our group has gotten so large; it's been a challenge to keep up and continue the huge level of support that we are known for. Many of us here have decided to take our group to the next level so we can be more effective with our support at a local level and also fund research. We also needed a website to share the wealth of information that we've accumulated in five years and to make it easier to support other families that we typically have so much in common with. We've started a non-profit organization called bedrok community - hope, support, education for autism. We are moving all posting to a message board that is now active at http://www.bedrokcommunity.org. Although, the message board is free we are encouraging a one time membership fee of $100 to support our projects, administration expenses of the message bord and website, and also starting up local chapters for support. Bedrok community members will have special privileges, 200 page e-oookbook of kid-friendly recipes, and a listing in our member referal directory. We are approving worthy individuals to list their business or profession along with their name, e-mail address and location. We will do this the first year for free.

Please sign up for the message board at http://www.bedrokcommunity.org.

I hope you all are excited to become a part of something that is wonderful and will make a difference.

How To Avoid Fatigue When Traveling

The Body Ecology Way
How many of you get jet lag, digestive distress or general fatigue when traveling? It is so common today, not just from the stress and lack of sleep that often accompanies travel - but also from what happens to your body when you fly.

If you stop and think about your last trip - what was it like? If you are like most people, it probably went something like this:

• You worked really hard to get your job and house settled before leaving - running around, staying up late, getting up early and burning the candle at both ends.
• The little time that remained was spent packing the things you and your family needed for your trip.
• You made lists on paper - or maybe in your head - and found that your mind was swimming with thoughts about what you might have forgotten.
• In the week-before rush, meals were eaten on the run, came from restaurants or out of boxes or cans.
• You ate the food on the plane, but did not really enjoy it - maybe you started to feel symptoms of digestive discomfort.

It's amazing the lengths we go to for a week or two off. We go on vacation to relieve the stress of everyday life and yet, we find that there is often a price for our precious time off - both before and after the trip. And what about business trips? We often arrive home more tired than before and "crash" from fatigue.
Well, there is a better way to travel - a way that will help minimize the stress we feel before, during and after our trips. Just like anything else, it takes time and preparation - but the increase in energy you will feel is worth the investment.

Traveling The Body Ecology Way
• Minimize stress - This is easier said than done in today's busy world. Consider making a list to get the details out of your head and onto paper. That alone will help minimize stress. Play soft music and take deep, focused breaths whenever you can the week before your trip. Consider taking a day off before and after your trip, to give yourself space to plan for and recover from travel.

• Prepare simple meals - The week before the trip, take some time on the weekend to prepare simple, healthy, BED meals for the week. Store them in the refrigerator or freezer so you can take them out and have quick, healthy food during the week. This will keep you healthy and full of vitamins and minerals to feed your body's energy producers - the thyroid and adrenals. Cultured veggies are a great fast food that is nutrient dense and can easily be carried with you for a meal before or after your flight.

• Plan your airport and plane nourishment - Bring a simple BED meal for the airport, but don't eat food on the plane. When the plane takes off, your whole body goes out of balance, including your digestive organs. This is why we feel so tired after flying. Bring liquids packed with minerals for the flight and plan your meals for before or afterwards. I always bring water bottles with FulvicAcid and Body Ecology Green Tea Extract - both sweetened with stevia. I also bring Vitality SuperGreen, for extra energy on long flights.

You deserve to be at your best whether you are traveling for business or pleasure. These few simple steps will make a big difference in how you feel, making travel a more enjoyable experience.

How to Eat Out at a Restaurant: 6 Tips to Eat Healthy, Choose Wisely and STILL Enjoy Yourself When Dining Out

by Donna Gates BodyEcology.com
Can you actually eat healthy in today's restaurants? Learn how to eat out, enjoy your meal and create vibrant health on the Body Ecology program!

Does it seem difficult to find a restaurant that serves healthy meals when you're ready for a night out on the town?

Do you fret eating out because you're certain it will ruin the healthy diet you've been following ... or do you eat out and later regret it because you didn't make healthy choices (or you didn't have any healthy choices to make)?

Well here's some good news -- you don't have to stay home to eat healthy meals.

In fact, you can follow our super-healthy Body Ecology program whether you choose to eat at home or in a restaurant...here's how!

Eating Out at a Restaurant: 6 Tips

1.Be prepared. Any time you start a new practice, the key to success is planning ahead. After awhile, it becomes an easy part of your routine. On long or short trips alone, with friends or family, I now carry a few basic necessities in a travel pouch that fits inside my bag everywhere I go. This way I am ready for a healthy meal out anytime, anywhere.

Here is what I bring:

1.Non-spill nalgene travel bottles filled with organic extra virgin olive oil or another favorite organic unrefined oil. Oils that do not have to be refrigerated like roasted pumpkinseed oil, MacNut Oil, pine nut oil work best for travel. Most restaurants use oils that are bleached, deodorized and refined. We call them "plastic" oils, and if you bring your own oil out to eat, your liver will be very thankful!
2.Celtic sea salt- most restaurants have the poisonous white table salt, so carry your own small vial or a small shaker of Celtic sea salt to season your meal.
3.Herbamare,a blend of herbs and sea salt, is another popular seasoning in our Body Ecology kitchens. A small vial of Herbamare helps you enliven anything you eat, especially vegetables and salads.
4.Stevia - carrying Stevia is a great way to ensure that you can sweeten your beverages and foods on the go, anytime. Learn more about Stevia by reading: The One Supplement that Should Be in Everyone's Cooking Cupboard.
5.Tea - I've noticed over the years that some restaurants only carry teas with caffeine or artificial flavorings, making it difficult to find a delicious hot or cold beverage out. I always carry our decaffeinated green and black tea concentrates in handy 2 ounce bottles. Learn more about the benefits of green and black tea by reading: Green Tea: The Greatest Benefits of This Ideal Drink.

Drink healthy hot or cold beverages with a touch of sweetness every time you are out!

2.Recognize the mainstream for what it is: Once you've made a commitment to be healthy, you can't help but notice the unhealthy choices that make up our so-called "modern world" where our main focus is on convenience. We've moved far away from the traditional whole foods of yesteryear where foods were prepared with both love and respect for their ability to create energy and life.

Instead of getting frustrated, I invite you to accept what is while quietly going about changing things for the better inside yourself. Often, this brings a sense of peace, allowing you to stay true to your commitment with an open heart and mind. The world can be changed by each of us doing this...one person at a time.

You may notice, as I have, that little by little, more restaurants are already offering healthier meal choices on their menus. In fact, chefs are often in tune to a patron's desires. If you see that the restaurant uses extra virgin olive oil in their salad dressings, thank the chef and let him know you'll be telling all your friends about his restaurant.

I truly believe chefs have a mission to help the world heal right now. I am very proud of my two friends, Richard and Jim Thomas. Their restaurant, R. Thomas Deluxe Grill, in Atlanta, Georgia on 1812 Peachtree Street NW has amazing, properly combined Body Ecology meals. The food is prepared in coconut oil and organic unrefined oils are used in their salad dressings. It is still the only restaurant I know that offers organic quinoa and millet dishes. There are many vegetable selections (including ocean veggies) and cultured veggies are served with each meal. You can see a sample menu at http://www.rthomasdeluxegrill.com/dinner.htm

One of my greatest dreams is to see restaurants all over America offering real food, BED style, like this. I want to show people how great our food tastes and how fantastic they can look and feel.
3.Know your options: One of the keys for surviving a night out on the town is to find a few favorite places with at least one healthy meal on the menu. Some restaurants are starting to offer more than just one or two healthy meal options. I've noticed that there are many restaurants offering salads with organic mixed baby greens. Do a little research and find out which restaurants offer organic vegetables, organic pasture-fed beef and poultry and wild fish. Most of all, find the ones that use real oils, like extra virgin olive oil and fats like butter and ghee.

Calling ahead is a great way to find out what's on the menu. It's not uncommon for patrons to have a food allergy so good restaurants expect to get inquiries by phone. Imagine how quickly we could change the restaurant industry if each of us began inquiring at our local restaurants about their oils.
4.Review the menu: Take a look at the entire menu and start to narrow down your options. If you see something that's close, ask the wait staff if it can be prepared the way you want it. If I see something I want on the menu, I will ask to have it prepared in a way that will meet my needs. For example, I may ask if I can have my vegetables cooked in real butter or simply steamed (since I'll be adding my own healthy, unrefined oil and Celtic sea salt!).

Some of my most die-hard Body Ecology Diet friends will bring cultured vegetables or a small amount of cooked Body Ecology grain-like seeds in a cooler bag or in their purse so that they can add a little flavor to their meal. In this way, if there are no great choices on the menu, they can order salad greens or steamed vegetables and add the quinoa, millet, or cultured veggies to what they brought.

And, of course, there will be times when you simply have to make compromises, like eating meats, fish and vegetables that are not organic. The fish may contain mercury, the meat may have hormones and the veggies may have been sprayed with pesticides. The good news is that your days of eating and drinking probiotic foods will serve you well. Cultured vegetables and probiotic liquids are full of beneficial microflora that negate or eat these up. In these situations, acknowledge yourself for sticking to an excellent program at home. Then enjoy yourself! Happiness heals!
Eating well is not about being perfect all the time. It is about developing habits and making wise choices most of the time.

For a great refresher on foods to choose, read: The Quick & Easy Guide to Improving Your Health on The Body Ecology Program.5.Enjoy sweet tastes. Most restaurants offer desserts laced with sugar, flour and other ingredients sure to feed pathogenic yeast (candida).Yet, many of us want the sweet taste in our meal. I have learned over the years that sometimes, all we need to satisfy a sweet tooth is a cup of tea with stevia.
IMPORTANT SIDENOTE: The current practice of putting sugar into your stomach after eating any kind of an animal protein such as fish or chicken will cause immediate bloating in your stomach. If you must eat sugar, have it alone on an empty stomach and follow it with a probiotic food or liquid rich in microflora that will help consume that sugar.
Even better, you can bring some CocoBiotic in one of your nalgene bottles and ask for a glass of sparkling mineral water and lemon or lime. Add a few drops of stevia and you have a delicious beverage that is sweet AND stops your cravings for sugar. If you really want something special, ask for a champagne glass. Don't be surprised if your dinner companions want to sample your drink for themselves!

6.Change your perspective. We've all heard that life is more enjoyable with a "glass is half full" perspective and the same is true for eating out. If you read the menu and feel deprived, you may end up sabotaging your good intentions. However, if you focus on enjoying your evening with your friends instead of the food you may find that you have a better time than ever when eating out.

In fact, many Body Ecology followers report that their dinner companions are intrigued by their properly combined meals and want to learn more. You can be sure that the next day your dinner companions will wish they had chosen as wisely. In the end, you'll probably notice that you feel less bloated and more energized.

If you find it challenging to change your perspective about your eating habits and when you go out to eat you throw all caution to the wind, you would likely benefit from overcoming the emotional issues you face. The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is a great way to clear limiting thought patterns, addictions and negative thinking. I highly recommend you learn more about EFT and consider trying it if you haven't already.

Creating Demand, One Meal at a Time
Nothing looks or feels better than vibrant health. With our busy lives, it's a given that we'll be eating out fairly regularly. Learning how to eat out while following your healthy Body Ecology program is a great way to stay committed to creating energy and vitality, even in a world that has forgotten the link between food and health.

The more of us who join together and choose healthy meals, one restaurant at a time, the more demand will be created for not just healthy options, but healthy restaurants!

Need to Detox? Here’s How You’ll Know...

By BodyEcology.com

Don’t get comfortable with not feeling well. Everyday stress is one contributor to poor health. But there’s a bright side. You can feel so much better after you detoxify your body properly. Our no fail, step-by-step system of healing nurtures your personal needs. Go slowly, enjoy lasting results and finally find relief.

Feeling sluggish, anxious or craving sweets in a big way? Maybe it’s time to help your body detoxify. Sure, you’ve heard this term many times, as cleansing and detoxification are becoming increasingly popular. That’s because people like you are taking control of your health and realizing the lasting benefits of making gradual natural improvements to your diet and lifestyle.

Do You Need to Cleanse?

Your body cleanses on a daily basis. It’s Nature’s gift to you that keeps illness away, gives you energy and allows you to think clearly. But, too many people are getting used to feeling “not so well.” Too many people live with the painful effects of a toxic system, and remain unbalanced in their thinking, emotions and physical health. You certainly don’t have to be one of them.

Signs that it’s Time to Detoxify

Cravings: It seems like everyone has cravings these days. There are emotional triggers to this, but physically cravings can come from an abundance of highly processed and concentrated foods that artificially stimulate dopamine (the pleasure neurotransmitter), which plays a role in addiction. So, you will “feel good” and naturally want more of the food that is making you feel good. 1 Adding in fermented foods can help teach your body to crave what makes you really feel well. Cravings really do disappear once you detoxify.
Food Allergies: Food allergies are often a sign that you don’t have the proper beneficial microflora to absorb and assimilate the nutrients from your food. This occurs when toxins like candida yeast proliferate and cause a leaky gut. Over time, you can recover from many food allergies or sensitivities by detoxifying your body and restoring that microflora with a balanced probiotic-rich diet, like Body Ecology.

Heart Disease: The accumulation of toxins in the body allows for increased risk of heart disease. A diet lacking in living and fermented foods can lead to mal absorption of nutrients. As a result, a domino affect of nutritional deficiencies, high cholesterol, heart attack, or even stroke can occur. Purifying the body of harmful substances is one significant way of lowering the risk of heart disease.

Adrenal Fatigue: If you are exhausted, having trouble losing weight, finding it hard to focus, or even experiencing problems in the bedroom, adrenal fatigue could be the culprit. The adrenal glands interact closely with the thyroid, liver, digestive system, brain function, and reproductive systems. When the liver and other vital cleansing organs are hindered from performing their tasks due to toxins, adrenal fatigue often results.

Mental/Emotional Instability: The hazards of allowing dangerous chemicals into the body are not limited to the physical being. Mental and emotional disorders can be caused by a toxic system, and, much like food allergies, may be corrected.

Depression, anxiety, and even some eating disorders have been linked to an abundance of certain toxic substances. A build-up of harmful chemicals can block the absorption and release of beneficial chemicals, leading to an imbalance that can have negative physical, psychological, and emotional effects.

Could parasites be part of your toxicity problem? Do you have any of these symptoms?

Yeast infections, painful urination and enlarged prostate
Diarrhea and foul smelling stools
Nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramps, peptic-ulcers and gas
Chronic fatigue, low energy or hyperactivity
Weight loss
Flu symptoms, fever and aches
Sleep disturbances
Gall bladder problems
Vision problems
Anemia

Restoring energy in your body and balance within your digestive tract with a Body Ecology lifestyle makes for your best defense against harmful “bugs” like parasites. But, if parasites are already bugging you, EcoClear is a unique full-spectrum blend of the best herbs that kill parasites AND their eggs naturally.

Detoxification is Simple if You Take it Step By Step

If you find your symptoms among these listed, fear not! Detoxification can be simple and you can begin today by making small changes to your diet. Check out the Body Ecology 7 Principles. These ancient principles for wellness are your best map to your healthiest self. Try beginning by adding some delicious, fermented foods to your daily routine, or incorporating healthy green smoothies, or simply by switching to cleaner eating and practicing proper food combining. All of these are steps that will help you detoxify. The Principle of Step by Step is a reminder that you needn’t focus on speed, just get yourself n the right path and keep moving forward.

Autism, Stem Cells and What the World URGENTLY Needs to Know: The Body Ecology

Perspectiveby Donna Gates for BodyEcology.com
Are you worried about the health of your children? Autism now affects 1 out of every 150 children born, but there is something we can do about it. Stem cell therapy is a new autism treatment that in addition to diet and lifestyle changes can heal our youngest generation and those to come.

As you know, I created the Body Ecology Diet to heal systemic fungal, viral and bacterial infections.

It has become clear over time that the Body Ecology program provides healing for many different kinds of physical problems. In fact, most of the health problems we suffer from today are fungal (or yeast) based...even cancer. This is certainly true for children who are suffering from an infection we now call autism. Spreading the word that autism is both treatable and preventable is a major goal.

Doctors and scientists are not exactly sure why children develop autism, but the statistics are frightening: roughly 1 out of every 150 children born is diagnosed with autism.1

Healing autism and other childhood development disorders has become a passion of mine. And while I understand the incredible power of nutrition and lifestyle support, I also seek therapies that will create the major shift parents of children with autism are seeking.

Stem cell therapy is a welcome discovery in our fight to greatly improve or eliminate autism from the lives of our children.

For this reason, I have been collaborating with Dr. Leonard Smith, who along with six other colleagues authored a research paper called Stem Cell Therapy for Autism. Dr. Smith and I are excited about how stem cell therapy, the Body Ecology program and some simple lifestyle changes can heal children with autism.

Here's what you need to know about these cutting edge techniques for autism treatment.

The Stem Cell and Autism Connection

What are stem cells?
Stem cells are primal cells that can divide and differentiate to become like any other more specialized cells in your body. The three types of stem cells are embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells and cord blood stem cells.

Embryonic stem cells are the most controversial because they are harvested from human embryos, while the other stem cells can be obtained from adult tissue or from the umbilical cord and placenta of newborn babies and their mothers without damage to them.

Why use stem cells for children with autism?
Children with autism suffer from two major conditions:

1.Hypoperfusion
2.Immune dysregulation

Hypoperfusion is decreased blood flow to the brain, meaning that the brain does not receive enough oxygen and cannot function normally.

Any time there is not enough blood flowing to the brain, the brain cells become inflamed and make more nitric oxide. This opens up the cells to receive too much calcium, which damages the mitochondria (that make the energy for cells). As a result, the brain cells die from lack of food.

Immune dysregulation in children with autism means that their immune systems do not respond normally to stimulation. When the body signals to the immune system that it needs help (like when the brain becomes inflamed) the proper immune response and subsequent healing do not occur in children with autism.

Instead, children with autism often have continually suppressed immune systems, chronic inflammation and suffer from autoimmune responses.

An autoimmune response happens when your body does not recognize your cells as your own and actually attacks the good cells. Autoimmune disorders include Crohn's disease and multiple sclerosis, in addition to autism.

Immune dysregulation is very apparent in the gastrointestinal health of children with autism.

Most suffer from symptoms ranging from diarrhea, gas, and bloating to intestinal lesions and inflammation of their gastrointestinal system.

Researchers have discovered that two kinds of stem cells can specifically address the hypoperfusion and immune dysregulation that are characteristic of children with autism.

The Stem Cell Therapy - Autism Theory
Dr. Fabio Solano has used CD34+ stem cells from cord blood and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) as a successful autism treatment.

Cord blood CD34+ stem cells injected into the patient improve blood flow to the brain, which supplies the brain with more oxygen and results in improved central nervous system functioning.

Mesenchymal stem cells are used to heal immune dysregulation in people with Crohn's disease and can also suppress the inflammation in children with autism and address their fundamental immune abnormality.

Using these two kinds of stem cells together can heal both the brain and the gut for a unique treatment that has great potential!

To learn more about the research that Dr. Leonard Smith and his colleagues performed, go to the Journal of Translational Medicine to read Stem Cell Therapy for Autism.

Leonard Smith, M.D., is a renowned gastrointestinal, vascular and general surgeon as well as an expert in the use of nutrition and natural supplementation. His research on stem cell therapy as an autism treatment is ground breaking, but he still believes that it is only one part of conquering the autism epidemic. Donna Gates and Dr. Leonard Smith are teaming up to create a better solution for autism that combines stem cell therapy with a healing Body Ecology diet and lifestyle program.

Patricia vs. Autism
Dr. Fabio Solano regularly treats patients with CD34+ stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells.

In fact, you can see the progress of one of his young patients on YouTube! Patricia Cabrera is a young girl who has had successful stem cell therapy to treat autism.

Under the supervision of Dr. Solano, her healing is remarkable, and her verbal and interpersonal skills visibly improve. For Patricia and other patients, stem cell therapy is an amazing solution that offers hope for a normal life.

Is stem cell therapy a viable autism treatment?

Stem cell therapy appears to be a safe way to treat autism, though it does take several treatments over the course of a year and may not be covered by insurance.

Stem cell therapy does have the potential to help a large number of children with autism; however, it is a major intervention, and children with autism need to be healthy from the inside out.

As Dr. Smith says, "Stem cell therapy is the dessert, not the main course," and nutrition and lifestyle should support optimal health.

Indeed, autism is a complex disorder, with complex causes. Even doctors are not sure exactly why it happens.

I believe that a subset of children have genomic variations in their detoxification pathways as well as serious immunologic issues. In addition, children whose mothers had candida, viruses or heavy metal toxins in their blood during pregnancy pass those issues on to their children. Then, these children with already weak immunity are exposed to toxins through vaccinations.

Exposure to candida, viral infections and heavy metals puts some children more at risk, and with the continual environmental and dietary toxins in our modern world, we are seeing more and more neurological disorders in both children and adults.

To learn more about the causes of autism read
The Root Causes of Autism: A Supposed Mystery That is Not So Mysterious

Fortunately, the human body is very flexible, and autism does not happen to everyone. I do believe that we can heal this condition, from the inside out.

What Every Girl & Woman Needs to Know NOW if They Ever Want to Have a Baby

By: Donna Gates for www.BodyEcology.com Autism, Down Syndrome, ADD, childhood obesity and diabetes ... the rate of serious childhood diseases is on the rise, with these epidemics leading the way. Why? And what can be done about it?

The Center for Disease Control currently estimates that an entire generation of children born since 2000 will be the first generation ever who will die before their parents do.

The loss of one of my children or my granddaughter would be my most difficult life challenge, so I already feel the pain of the millions of young parents whose children are around the age of 7. How many will live to bury the child they gave birth to only a short time ago?
Women are delivering low birth weight and pre-term babies in epidemic numbers, and both conditions accurately predict future health problems like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

Even more troubling, rates of autism have increased from 1 in 10,000 to 1 child out of 166! 2

At a time when giving birth to a healthy baby seems more and more difficult, most women are unaware of how their nutrition and lifestyle can positively impact the health of their future child.

Read on to learn about common conditions that affect the health of unborn babies and then discover how the Body Ecology program can create wellness for both mother and child.

Fetal nutrition is the best indicator of longevity and future health, and parents play a huge role in having healthy babies. Read: Why Are So Many Babies Being Born Too Early?

Problems During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, many changes occur in a woman's body including:

Your progesterone rises, which is natural and very good because this hormone is essential for retaining the fetus. However, along with elevated progesterone, blood sugar also increases. Both blood sugar and progesterone play an important role in your developing baby's brain yet this increased blood sugar (along with ever-increasing stress and a diet of sugary processed foods) sets the stage for a systemic yeast infection to become even more acute.
Your immune system is weakened so that your own antibodies do not see your developing baby as an enemy. This makes it more difficult for your immune system to stave off bacterial, viral and fungal infections.
Studies show that as many as 85% of women have a vaginal infection when they give birth3 and pass on dangerous pathogens to their newborn babies instead of the beneficial bacteria that create a foundation for wellness.

Babies who lack an abundance of beneficial bacteria start life with gastrointestinal pain like colic reflux and even infant constipation. They will not develop the necessary immunity and will not be able to cleanse out the inherited toxins from their parents and grandparents.

From this state of weakened immunity the baby is vulnerable to more serious problems including autism.

The Infection/Autism Connection

Understanding fungal infections may be the key to unlocking the mystery of autism. When a woman has a systemic fungal infection (candidiasis) she can infect her baby, and neither of them may have any visible symptoms!

Babies born with yeast in their gut (inherited from mothers with candidiasis) lack the normal healthy bacteria that establish a thriving immune system.

A baby's blood-brain barrier isn't formed until 6 weeks after birth. Before the blood-brain barrier is formed, there is potential for fungal, bacterial and viral infections to enter your baby's brain.

A baby born without an inner ecosystem and therefore a healthy immune system is not a good candidate for vaccinations like the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella). Their weak immune systems cannot develop antibodies to the viruses and instead the infant actually becomes infected with the disease that the vaccination was intended to prevent!

Vaccinations were originally created for people with strong immune systems who had resistance to the pathogens that were injected into their blood stream. Newborn babies have not had time to build strong immune systems. Without a healthy inner ecosystem, the immune system will never be strong.

Most parents of autistic children tell us that their child appeared to be "normal" upon birth. They may have had some health issues like digestive disturbances, constipation, frequent colds and ear infections - yet when vaccinated (often with the MMR at 18 months) their child began to regress in their language development and social behaviors. They behavior even becomes abnormal, much like a schizophrenic. If you look at photos of these children you can see from their eyes that they appear to have an infection in their brain.
Our theory at Body Ecology (based on my research) is that upon inoculation with these three live viruses, the child who is not strong enough to be vaccinated is instead infected. The mumps virus in particular will cause the child's blood pressure to elevate. Elevated blood pressure will open the blood brain barrier. Any infections in the body can then easily enter the brain. Even though current research shows clearly that the blood-brain barrier opens when blood pressure is elevated, your child's pediatrician may not know this, since it is not taught in medical school.

While a child is supposed to develop immunity, his/her immune system is not developed because the inner ecosystem was not established and maintained at birth. The immune system is already overwhelmed dealing with an inherited fungal infection. The child has no ability to resist the assault from 3 live viruses: measles, mumps and rubella (measles has been found on the gut wall by Dr. Andrew Wakefield).
For more on autism and fetal health, read The Myths and Truths of the Mercury/Autism Connection.

Mom's Mood

Establishing a vibrant inner ecosystem is just one way an expecting mother can influence her baby's health; a mother's mood can also help or harm her unborn child.

When a mother is under a lot of stress during pregnancy, her fetus ends up with expanded adrenals and the baby is unable to handle stress. (Adrenals are glands that provide energy to every system in your body.)

When the adrenals are healthy, a person is calm and centered with excellent mental focus. Children who experienced expanded adrenal cells in the womb will be highly intelligent but will find it difficult to concentrate. These children are usually diagnosed as having ADD or ADHD.

Nutrition and lifestyle can significantly impact your health and the health of your baby. If you are planning to have a child, the Body Ecology program is your foundation for creating wellness.

Body Ecology's Pregnancy Protocol

The Body Ecology program's emphasis on establishing a healthy inner ecosystem, cleansing your body of built-up toxins, and nourishing your adrenals is an ideal way to prepare your body for pregnancy.

If you are thinking about becoming pregnant, it's not too late to start thinking about your own health!

The best things you can do to prepare for pregnancy are:

1.Start the Body Ecology program - this will help both parents build health and vitality to pass on to baby.

2.Build up a storehouse of nutrients in your cells.

3.Eliminate toxins that have been accumulating in those cells throughout your life.

4.Eliminate stress as much as possible before and during your pregnancy.
Crave Pickles and Ice Cream? Try Fermented Foods!
You may have heard of pregnant women who crave the unlikely combination of pickles and ice cream. Craving pickles and ice cream is actually your body's way of saying it needs sour, fermented foods rich in beneficial bacteria and the sugar to feed them.
Unfortunately, most commercial pickles and sauerkraut are pasteurized and contain too much salt and vinegar, so you won't get the health benefits of true fermented foods. For more on beneficial fermented foods and drinks, read: Which Fermented Food Starter Should You Use for What?

The Body Ecology program is the only nutrient-rich, probiotic diet that emphasizes fermented foods and drinks. These superfoods establish plenty of good bacteria in your intestines that quickly populate your birth canal. Maintaining this healthy inner ecosystem is the crucial first step to wellness for you and your baby.

When your baby passes through the birth canal, he/she will be inoculated by beneficial bacteria and be well on the way to establishing his/her own inner ecosystem.

Benefits of the Body Ecology Diet's Fermented Foods:

Create A Healthy Inner Ecosystem - Fermented foods lay down the foundation for a healthy inner ecosystem.
Provide More Nutrients - When fermented, a food's nutrients increase hundreds of times. The microflora, abundant in unpasteurized, fermented foods, act like enzymes to properly process a food, releasing all the nutrients for you to absorb. At the same time they help retain those nutrients so your blood delivers the best possible nutrients to each growing cell in your baby's developing brain and body.
Improve Digestion - The microflora in fermented foods increase the bio-availability of each meal by improving digestion.
Reduce Damage From Sugar - Microflora enjoy the sugars in foods and shield you from damage that sugar can often cause.
Control Cravings - Fermented foods help control cravings for carbohydrates and provide that sour taste so many pregnant women intuitively crave.
Help The Body Detoxify - Microflora will attack toxins, combat parasites and restore the acid/alkaline balance of your intestines.
Help Babies Digest Mother's Milk - Mother's milk is nature's most perfect food for babies. But it is critical to establish a healthy inner ecosystem so that the baby digests the milk. We often say that finely pureed cultured veggies and small amounts of fermented beverages should be introduced as "baby's second foods."
Ideally both potential mothers and fathers will follow the Body Ecology diet for 6 months to 2 years before conception. The father's genes contribute to a healthy placenta, liver and adrenals, all important for your baby's immunity.

A Legacy of Health

Nutrition and lifestyle can significantly impact your health and the health of your baby. Whether you are pregnant, nursing or just planning to have a baby some day, the Body Ecology program is your foundation for creating wellness and will help ensure that you have happy, healthy children.

Create a legacy of health and happiness for your baby - read The Body Ecology Diet to prepare for your pregnancy!

Every nerve and cell is a network contributing to our intelligence and our learning capability. Many educators have found this work quite helpful in improving overall concentration in class. Introduced here, you will find four basic "Brain Gym" exercises which implement the ideas developed in "Smart Moves" and can be used quickly in any classroom.

Below is a series of movements called PACE. They are surprisingly simple, but very effective! Everyone has a unique PACE and these activities will help both teacher and student become positive, active, clear and energetic for learning. For colorful, fun PACE and Brain Gym® supplies contact the Edu-Kinesthetics on-line bookstore at Braingym.com .

•Drink Water
As Carla Hannaford says, "Water comprises more of the brain (with estimates of 90%) than of any other organ of the body." Having students drink some water before and during class can help "grease the wheel". Drinking water is very important before any stressful situation - tests! - as we tend to perspire under stress, and de-hydration can effect our concentration negatively.

•"Brain Buttons"
This exercise helps improve blood flow to the brain to "switch on" the entire brain before a lesson begins. The increased blood flow helps improve concentration skills required for reading, writing, etc.

•Put one hand so that there is as wide a space as possible between the thumb and index finger.
•Place your index and thumb into the slight indentations below the collar bone on each side of the sternum. Press lightly in a pulsing manner.
•At the same time put the other hand over the navel area of the stomach. Gently press on these points for about 2 minutes.

•"Cross Crawl"
This exercise helps coordinate right and left brain by exercising the information flow between the two hemispheres. It is useful for spelling, writing, listening, reading and comprehension.

•Stand or sit. Put the right hand across the body to the left knee as you raise it, and then do the same thing for the left hand on the right knee just as if you were marching.
•Just do this either sitting or standing for about 2 minutes.

•"Hook Ups"
This works well for nerves before a test or special event such as making a speech. Any situation which will cause nervousness calls for a few "hook ups" to calm the mind and improve concentration.

•Stand or sit. Cross the right leg over the left at the ankles.
•Take your right wrist and cross it over the left wrist and link up the fingers so that the right wrist is on top.
•Bend the elbows out and gently turn the fingers in towards the body until they rest on the sternum (breast bone) in the center of the chest. Stay in this position.
•Keep the ankles crossed and the wrists crossed and then breathe evenly in this position for a few minutes. You will be noticeably calmer after that time.

Using Music in the Classroom
Six years ago researchers reported that people scored better on a standard IQ test after listening to Mozart. You would be surprised at how much music can also help English learners.

Using Colored Pens
The use of colored pens to help the right brain remember patterns. Each time you use the pen it reinforces the learning process.

5 Major Brain Areas:
Memory, Concentration, Language, Visual & Spatial, and Executive Functions.

Multiple Intelligence Types

Do you think IQ tests provide the best indication of intelligence? You may be surprised to know that some scientists don't think so.

As a matter of fact, one scientist came up with a new theory about intelligence more than twenty years ago. Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard University proposed that people were much more complex than standard testing suggested. He argued that traditional intelligence tests favored logical and mathematical people, but that different people had different strengths.

The intelligence types were:

1.Linguistic and verbal intelligence: good with words
2.Logical intelligence: good with math and logic
3.Spatial intelligence: good with pictures
4.Body/movement intelligence: good with activities
5.Musical intelligence: good with rhythm
6.Interpersonal intelligence: good with communication
7.Intrapersonal intelligence: good with analyzing things
8.Naturalist intelligence: good with understanding natural world

Essential Oils and the Brain

Improve Mental Clarity and Focus, Thinking, Learning and Test Scores
Mar 17, 2008 Victoria Anisman-Reiner

Essential oils can improve thinking by carrying oxygen to the brain and stimulating brain centers for learning - improving writing, work, and test marks.

Fragrances have the power to affect mood, emotions, and our impressions of the people and places around us. Scents can be comforting, enticing, exciting, or depressing and unpleasant. Is it any wonder, then, that the sense of smell has the ability to heal the brain and improve mental focus? Essential oils such as frankincense, peppermint, rosemary and vetiver have been shown to clear the mind and improve test scores, writing, and productivity.

How Essential Oils Feed the Brain
Essential oils nourish many of the body's systems by carrying oxygen and other nutrients to the cells. The cells of the brain are no different than others in this regard. Essential oils contain a mixture of both large and small compounds – molecules small enough to cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain itself.

Essential oils may be an invaluable tool for cleansing toxins and heavy metals, such as aluminum, that lodge in the brain and contribute to memory loss and Alzheimer's.

They also trigger areas in the brain (e.g. the amygdala) that relate to the emotions – the parts of the brain that store trauma and pleasure, as well as memory. This is why essential oils can be used in therapy to help release fears and change belief systems. It also explains why smelling the same oil while studying and writing a test helps with recall of information.

Essential Oils for Better Learning
Almost any essential oil can help with learning and studying skills, depending on your needs: most oils have either stimulating or sedative properties, either refreshing the mind or calming those who are worried about their performance. Be aware, however, that results will vary greatly with the quality of the essential oils used – adulterated oils (poorly pressed, or with junk chemicals added) can make people feel drowsy or distracted.

The highest theraputic grade I have found and use daily is the brand do-Terra. Contact Kimberly Gingras for more info or for a free essential oil gift at kimberlycbg@yahoo.com

Essential Oils for ADD and ADHD

Better focus, quicker learning, calm and grounding - thanks to scent
Mar 5, 2007 Victoria Anisman-Reiner

Essential oils are one of the most effective alternative treatments for ADD and ADHD. Find out how these oils can cross into the brain and help children and adults.

Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder is the childhood epidemic of our age. It has been estimated that as many as 20% of children currently in school exhibit ADD or ADHD behavior patterns, while studies suggest that only half that number are medicated with the drugs used to treat ADHD. The number of “untreated” children may, in part, be due to parents who choose to pursue an alternative route, rather than medicating their children. One of the most effective approaches to treating ADD and ADHD - without drugs - is the use of pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils.

Because many pure essential oils contain small chemical components, they are among the few molecules, natural or synthetic, that can cross the blood-brain barrier and directly heal the brain. This makes essential oils a powerful tool to treat brain disorders and emotional issues.

Some of the basics of essential oil use were discussed in a previous aromatherapy article. The oils discussed below are especially helpful in addressing the needs of adults and kids dealing with ADD and ADHD.

A study conducted in 2001 by Dr. Terry Friedman compared the effects of lavender, vetiver, and cedarwood essential oils in improving focus and learning in ADD and ADHD kids. Vetiver was found to be the most effective in observations and brain wave scans - showing improvements in 100% of subjects. Cedarwood essential oil was 83% effective, and lavender 60%.

How to use these oils:
Lavender - Known as the “universal oil,” lavender is good for almost everything. One of its most well-known properties is as a sedative and for calming the body and mind. Rubbing a few drops on a child’s feet, shoulders, or chest can help them relax and sleep more easily. But be aware: lavender is one of the most commonly adulterated oils and difficult to find pure (labels can be misleading on this one).

The highest theraputic grade I have found and use daily is the brand do-Terra. Contact Kimberly Gingras for more info or for a free essential oil gift at kimberlycbg@yahoo.com

ADHD News Tip # 9: Hook-ups, It's Not What You Think

Hooking-up instead of dating in high school and college is all the
rage. Certainly doesn't encourage mature, healthy relationships. Not
recommended.

On the other hand, Brain Gym's Hook-ups (which has nothing to do
with dating or relationships) is highly recommended for calming
down, focusing, getting grounded and centered.

Sit quietly. Breathe deeply. Cross your right ankle over the left.
Cross your right wrist over the left. With palms together, thumbs
down, and fingers intertwined, bring your hands up under your chin.
If it feels safe, close your eyes.

See a picture of hook-ups at http://www.ADHDChildrenToday.com/articles.htm
Look for "Caleb Sits in Hook-ups" in "Tips, Tricks and Strategies."

Hmm, maybe calming down, focusing, and getting grounded with hook-
ups would help prevent impulsive hooking up among college kids.

Next: Up, Down, Around, and Nod (and it's not as easy as it sounds!)
